Rainbow Dash My Little Pony Custom Sculpture WIP by Blackout-Comix Rainbow Dash My Little Pony Custom Sculpture WIP by Blackout-Comix
Here we have Rainbow Dash from My Little Pony, Friendship is Magic. She still requires some additional preparation and painting, but has reached the point where I can show a WIP pic of her.

She is 4inches tall. No armatures were used. She is a solid piece made from Fimo sculpting clay.

She is a commission for :iconfarondk:

Overall, pretty happy with her so far. I will paint her in the coming days and post a finished pic then.

These last 2 weeks have been really rough, so I'm glad to finally have her out.

My Little Pony (C) Hasbro

Sculpture made by me.

Your sculpts are so realistic they look like 3D sculpts.

Hi I am using my phone to ask this so I don't know how well it will show up but I am a HUGE rainbow dash fan and was wondering if you could please do a commission of Rainbowdash for me. I have been searching for months now for a good mlp figure.

Not yet. I've been asked several times to make one, but I've been changing my methods with every sculpt so a tutorial would be out of date before I could even post it. I'd be happy to offer some tips though, if you had some questions.

Well I have the problem that I get my fingerprints on the clay and when I make some with white clay I get it to stay nice and clean, If you understand what I mean

Good. Sculpey isn't what you want to be using. Fingerprints are easy to leave in that clay though, so I thought that might be what you're using. You need to be using a polymer clay, as it is possible to bake that clay multiple times as long as you let it cool in-between bakings. This allows for smoothing out of any rough patches by adding multiple layers of clay. Additionally, you will need to use some fine grit sandpaper. That is the key to getting a very smooth looking sculpt. I personally use 220grit. That will easily get rid of any fingerprints. :)

but then I tried to use sandpaper but I can't say I'm happy with the result

Did you use fine grit? Heavier grit than 220 will leave streaks. It also depends on how you are sanding. Sanding in a circular pattern will improve the results. Are you using colored clays or plain clay to be painted later?

Not quite sure if you are asking about my tools or the clay I use, so I'll just tell you both.

I use Fimo 'puppen' doll clay and a large assortment of tools. The most important ones being an exacto knife, a needle, and a hand drill.

Thanks and hope that helps. :)

WOW! This looks even better than the official figure! FANTASTIC!

I'm sure you get this a lot.. but do you use sculpting tools for your sculptures? Also, how do you make your figures so smooth? :)

Thanks. :D

I do use tools. My primary ones are an exacto knife, a needle, and 220 grit sandpaper. Careful sculpting combined with a lengthy sanding session is usually enough to get it smooth.

Thank you for the kind words. I attribute all my ability to being a God-given gift. I do it by trial and error. If you want to commission, then you will probably have to wait. Unless it's something I really feel I could get invested in, my commissions are currently closed. What did you have in mind?

Currently there are quite a few commissions ahead of you and once they are finished I had planned on taking a break to make myself and some family members some sculpts. However, I still might consider it. Did you have a picture of the 2 ponies and what is your approximate budget? Thank you.
